Granite and quartz for 1970s kitchens
The 2020-2024 American Community Survey puts the median home in Orangevale at 1976. Kitchens of that age usually had tile or laminate, and many have already been through one update, often to granite tile or an early slab granite with a bullnose edge. The common next step is a full slab of quartz or a lighter granite, with an undermount sink and an eased edge.
Granite remains popular here with cooks who want a surface that takes a hot pan and a stone that varies from slab to slab. Most granite is sealed and rechecked with a water-drop test. See granite countertops.
Outdoor kitchens on larger lots
Orangevale grew out of the Orange Vale Colony on the 1844 Rancho San Juan grant, and some of its orchard-era parcels are still larger than a typical suburban lot. Original olive trees still line parts of Chestnut, Orangevale, Main and Walnut Avenues. That space shows up as outdoor kitchens and bar tops.
- Heat. Sacramento's July normal high is about 94°F, with about 20 or more days at 100°F or above in a typical year. Standard indoor quartz is not warrantied outdoors.
- Good outdoor choices. Granite, or porcelain and sintered stone, which are UV-stable. Seal natural stone and plan shade over the cooking area.
- Leaf and pollen. Oak and olive debris stains porous stone if left wet. A sealed granite or a porcelain top is easier to keep clean under trees.

Vanity tops and remnants
Bathroom updates in 1970s homes often start with cultured marble or laminate vanity tops. A single vanity top typically costs $200 to $1,000 installed. Vanities are a good use for 2 cm stone and for remnants, the offcuts left from larger kitchen jobs, which can bring the price down when the color you want is in stock. See countertop remnants.
Permits in unincorporated Sacramento County
Orangevale is unincorporated, so permits go through Sacramento County. A like-for-like countertop replacement is finish work and generally does not need a permit. Plumbing, gas or electrical changes for an outdoor kitchen usually do, so confirm with the county before the fabricator templates.
