Granite and quartz for 1980s to 2000s kitchens
The 2020-2024 American Community Survey puts the median home in Dixon at 1988. Kitchens from the late 1980s through the 2000s typically have tile, laminate or first-generation granite, and an island or peninsula. A typical kitchen has 30 to 50 sq ft of counter; in quartz or granite that usually lands between $2,500 and $7,500 installed, with large islands and high-end stone at $10,000 or more.
| If you want | Consider | Why |
|---|---|---|
| No sealing | Quartz | Non-porous, consistent color |
| Hot pans straight on the counter | Granite or quartzite | Natural stone takes heat |
| The lowest stone price | Entry-level granite | About $50 to $80 per sq ft installed |
See granite countertops for levels and slab selection.
Outdoor kitchens in valley heat
Dixon has a hot-summer Mediterranean climate, which decides what can go on an outdoor kitchen or bar top. Standard indoor quartz is not warrantied for outdoor use. Granite and porcelain or sintered stone (UV-stable) are the usual choices; seal natural stone and shade the cooking area. See outdoor kitchen countertops.
Vanity tops in multi-bath homes
Ordering vanity tops at the same time as the kitchen lets the fabricator nest them on the same slab, so colors match and offcuts get used. A single vanity top typically costs $200 to $1,000 installed; remnants can lower that if the color is in stock. See bathroom vanity tops.
Permits and local notes
Dixon is an incorporated city in Solano County, so permits go through the City of Dixon, not Sacramento or Yolo County. A like-for-like countertop replacement is finish work and generally does not need a permit. Plumbing, gas or electrical changes, including for an outdoor kitchen, usually do.
A local footnote: the town began as Silveyville in 1852 and moved a few miles to the new Central Pacific line around 1871; the Dixon Methodist Church on North Jefferson Street is one of the buildings from that move. The Dixon May Fair, which started in 1885, is California's oldest fair. Tell us about your project and we pass it to a licensed fabricator who works here.
