Prefab and custom countertops compared
| Prefab pieces | Custom slab fabrication | |
|---|---|---|
| How it's made | Cut to stock sizes before you buy, edge already finished | Cut from a full slab to a template of your cabinets |
| Fit | Trimmed on site; joins where pieces meet | Made to your walls, corners and appliance openings |
| Seams | Usually more, set by the stock piece lengths | Fewer; placed where the fabricator chooses |
| Edges | Whatever profile the piece came with | Your choice of profile |
| Color choice | What's in stock | Any slab or quartz color you can get |
| Best for | Straight runs, rentals, laundry rooms, budget flips | L- and U-shaped kitchens, islands, undermount sinks |
Where prefab saves money
The savings come from skipping templating and most shop fabrication. That works best when:
- The kitchen is a straight run or a simple galley with square walls.
- There are few cutouts, or a drop-in (top-mount) sink rather than an undermount.
- You are fine with the stock edge profile and the colors on hand.
- It's a secondary space: a laundry, garage workbench, wet bar or rental unit.
Compare against full fabrication: quartz and granite typically run $50 to $150 per sq ft installed, and a 30 to 50 sq ft kitchen usually lands between $2,500 and $7,500. Ask for quotes on both before deciding. See countertop cost in Sacramento.
Where prefab falls short
- Corners and L-shapes. Stock pieces meet at a seam at every corner, and out-of-square walls leave gaps that have to be filled.
- Islands. Island tops are usually wider than stock depths and want to be one piece.
- Undermount sinks. The cutout has to be cut and polished on site, which is harder to do cleanly without shop equipment.
- Silica. Any on-site cutting of quartz or high-silica stone falls under Cal/OSHA's silica standard (Title 8, §5204): wet methods, no dry cutting. Ask whoever trims prefab on site how they comply.
- Warranty and install. Some prefab is sold material-only. Know who is responsible for the install and any warranty before you buy.
Remnants: the in-between option
For small tops like a vanity or bar, a fabricator's remnant gives you a custom-cut piece with your choice of edge, often for less than a full slab. See countertop remnants.
